Lullaby or Livelyby? Sleepytime trick

A baby friend of mine goes to sleep as soon as her mum has danced her around the room and turned her upside down! Her mum was singing Two Little Bats (Bounce and Rhyme 2, track 11, and episode 9 of Playsongs Playtime podcast). It ends with the grown up, holding baby securely against their upper body, bending forwards at the waist so baby is upside down. What kind of a lullaby is that? A lullaby or a livelyby??? Whatever it's called, it works. When my own little baby was desperate for sleep but in pain with colic, the best soother was me dancing her around the room against my shoulder, patting her back and singing Leon Rosselson's beautiful little dance song, One Two Three (Playsongs). My baby friend's mum reckoned it was the sensory stimulation which did the trick. So maybe we're missing a trick when we think of lullabies as the way to drift a baby off to sleep. That's not to knock lullabies - they are universal and obviously do work - but they are combined with rocking, which in itself is a physical form of sensory stimulation. So if sleepytimes are tricky times for you and your baby, try a Livelyby. We have loads of those for you (and lullabies). Here's a link to where you can find Two Little Bats on our podcast: episode 9 https://www.playsongs.co.uk/podcast/episode/20b6fff1/9-dances-and-surprises and on our website audio stream: https://www.playsongs.co.uk/bounce-and-rhymetime-2
