On an outing, it can be a challenge to keep a toddler engaged and motivated to keep moving along. Toddlers tire quickly, stop mid-walk, want to go off in a different direction, need a little boost to keep them going. Episode 15 of Playsongs Playtime offers two perfect little boosts to help keep you and your toddler happily making progress together in the same direction!

What you'll find in all our Playsongs Playtime podcast episodes...

Playsongs Playtime is a podcast for you and your baby or toddler. In each episode, we feature one playrhyme and one playsong from the Playsongs catalogue. We show you how to use them and we give you lots of repetition so you've got them handy for when you might need them next - like on an outing. It's five minutes of interactive fun with all the benefits of support for language development, confidence building, and physical coordination woven in. The best bit, we think, is the time for connection between you and your little one.

Episode 15 gives you two moving along games that are perfect for encouraging toddlers during walks. Think of them as 'battery chargers' for tired or grumpy toddlers. Mind - you can become a victim of your own success! My own little grand toddler enjoyed the games so much, she learned that all she had to do was to stop, stay still and her granny would take her hands and whoosh her along to one of her favourite playrhymes. But who'd say no to an invitation like that? We both got along faster.

One to make ready

One to make ready is our playrhyme in this episode of Playsongs Playtime. You can do it on your own, but it's even more easily and joyously done with a grown up or big sibling on the other side of your toddler. Take a toddler hand each, and with a big step forward on each count, go: One to make ready Two to make steady Three to prepare and... Now swoop that toddler off their feet into a big swing forward ~ AWAY goes the mare. Ha ha! Great fun. And great progress.

Miss Mary Mac

That little grandtoddler, now so much bigger, still loves this little wall walker. We both love the story of Miss Mary Mac, with silver buttons all down her back, asking her gramp for a first class stamp so she could send the elephant to the top of the lamp. Once there, she needed her gran to hold her hand so both of them could stand on the elephant's back. But they climbed so high that (and if judged carefully this is where the wall your toddler is walking along runs out) they had to learn to fly to get back back down to Earth. You'll find Miss Mary Mac, her nan and her song in this episode of Playsongs Playtime.

No babies left behind

No we haven't forgotten them! There are no babies left behind in this episode of  Playsongs Playtime. It's not just toddlers who can love these moving along games. They work wonderfully well with a baby on your knee. Bounce baby higher and higher on One to make ready and lift baby high above your head on 'AWAY goes the mare'. Sing Miss Mary Mac's story, taking a baby ankle in each hand to walk them left right in the air, then stand and fly baby up and round in a circle to bring you both back to Earth. Teeny tiny babies can be held securely against your shoulder or snuggled in a sling, while you bouncily walk them along to the rhyme and the song.
