Celebrate the transition to Autumn with a sunflower shaker. It's quick and easy to make and you can adapt it to any season or occasion. Use different colours, decorations and shaker material. During the hot summer months, I made one with tiny stones from the beach and a stripy blue and white fabric with a ship sticker to top it.
What you need:
A jar – clear plastic if available
Brown or orange fabric
Tricolore pasta
Elastic band
Glue
A decoration; felt cut-out, sticker or drawing.
Step 1
Fill the jar with the shaker material; I have chosen tricolore pasta here for the autumnal shades and bright sound. Fasten the fabric over the top, using a strong toddler-proof elastic band.
Step 2
Fix your decoration onto the top of the jar securely using child-friendly glue.
Step 3
Shake away to an autumnal tune. At toddler Playsongs we will be singing this adaptation of ‘Golden Corn’ by Margaret Shepherd. You can listen to the original – it's In Playsongs, Album 2 track 13.
Golden sunflowers growing so high! (start crouched and grow tall, stretching high)
The wind blows east, (shake your shaker as you bend to one side)
And the wind blows west, (shake your shaker as you bend to the other side)
And the little grey seeds fall down to the earth. (shake your shaker from high to low)
